Jo Cassidy was born in Shropshire and grew up in the mediaeval market town of Ludlow. She was surrounded by music from the very beginning. Mum's side of the family were all avid musicians playing pianos and brass while Dad was a guitarist and singer with his own bands through the 60s. One of her earliest memories is of sitting at the top of the stairs listening to her Dad playing his guitar and singing with friends after a night at 'The Lion'!
At the age of nine Jo started to learn to play the guitar. Mum and Dad bought her her first guitar, a Yamaha, and she didn't look back after that. She quickly picked it up and was soon playing in the school band and accompanying herself singing 'Streets of London' at school concerts. Jo sang publicly for the first time in 1977 at Silver Jubilee concert in Ludlow Town Hall singing 'When I need You' accompanied by her Dad.
At the age of 14 Jo started to learn to play the cornet and quickly became proficient enough to take on the role of Principal cornet in the local Town band. The cornet playing has taken Jo all over Europe playing to huge audiences in the famous Bitburg festival in Germany. Whilst there Jo also sang with English Festival Brass to arrangements done specially for her by Nigel Simmons. These always went down very well with audiences as it is rare to find a singer with a Brass Band. Nigel has since gone on to work with Jane McDonald and many other famous singers.
Jo began working with adults with learning difficulties in 1990 using her musical skills as a recreational and therapeutic aid. She remained with Vision Homes for 13 years making great friends with both residents and staff. Jo carried on playing and singing during this time both abroad and locally in the world famous Ludlow Festival.
In 2004 Jo moved to Scotland to be with her husband to be Gerry. She was signed to Emkay Entertainments and started gigging all over Scotland from as far away as Dornoch to Hawich in the south. It was playing in the clubs of Scotland that Jo honed her skills that would be so valuable later on in Tenerife. She had a fabulous time in Scotland but was destined to live in sunnier climes! When Gerry became ill things were put on hold for a while and Jo took some time off to help him recuperate. Jo and Gerry had already made the decision to move to the Canaries so when Gerry took medical retirement the time was right for the move. In November they moved to Tenerife. Jo began singing there in following year. She has sung in restaurants, bars and large holiday complexes. In 2009 Jo entered 'Tenerife's got Talent' and made it to the final! It was great fun that raised her profile on the island.
At present Jo is Compering on The Top Square San Blas On Golf del Sur from Sunday to Thursday. They provide entertainment 7 nights a week with the fabulous Suzy Q compering at weekends. There is also cabaret at nine most night.
